WHY I TRI
Why am I participating in the Tri For A Cure and raising money for the Maine Cancer Foundation?
For my friend, Denise….
At 40 years old, she was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer :( Here is her story:
I was 40 years old and had cervical radiculopathy. My left arm was hurting and my hand was numb. In the middle of the night I was in so much pain. I went to the doctor and they recommended an MRI. That MRI showed a couple thyroid nodules, one quiet large and one small. I made an appointment with an oncologist for a biopsy and it came back suspicious for the large one so they recommended removing it. I, of course, was very nervous and worried about the scar I'd have on my neck.
I went in for my surgery (partial thyroidectomy) and they did a frozen section (right in the OR) and also sent one to pathology. When I spoke to the surgeon after the surgery they said the frozen section was benign...what a relief!!!!!! The thought of cancer scared me to death!!!!! About a week later I got a call from my surgeon stating that I had Stage 1 Thyroid Cancer. I couldn't believe it!!! I felt like I was going to die, I cried right when I got off the phone. I thought “Oh great, I’m following in my mom’s path” How would I tell my girls, etc.???
I was scheduled for the other 1/2 of my thyroid to be removed. Yes, they had to open that incision again!!!! I wasn't looking forward to going through that pain again, but on the other hand I wanted the cancer to be gone! They mentioned that I may need radioactive iodine after to attack all the other cells, but luckily I didn't have to do that.
My thyroid levels need to be controlled with Levothyroxine. It took blood work every 6 weeks for several months to finally get my level normal. I gained a ton of weight and was taking 3 naps a day...I had no energy...which wasn't normal for me!
I'm not 100% back to normal but I'm thankful this is behind me. That C word is very scary and can change your life in a day!
If it wasn't for me getting that MRI for my other issue I might not even know today that I had cancer!
Thank you for your help in the fight against cancer!!!!!
Please help support this important fight! I’m so grateful Denise is on the road back to health and can be there for her 2 beautiful daughters :) I’m very excited to be participating in the Tri For A Cure in honor of Denise :)
